Density measuring instruments

Density measurement is an important task in research and development. Measurement of density of liquids and gases when they are flowing is easy compared to a solid under such conditions. Mass density is mass per unit volume and weight density is weight-force per unit volume. The ratio of the density of the substance to the density of water at 4 degree centigrade is known as specific gravity. One method of measurement of density is by using load cells. Hydrometer is another device where a glass float is weighted at the bottom with mercury or lead balls to make it float upright. When the force is of reasonable magnitude, it can be used to load a cantilever type load cell. In another design, three floats are connected together to form a single assembly with freedom of rotation. Here each float differs from others in its volume and density. Air bubbler system and U-tube weighing system are two other devices used for density measurements.
