Stress-strain measurement is a complex task for any mechanical engineer. Electrical strain gauges are common in use today because of its exceptional characteristics. Here a change in strain produces a change in some electrical characteristic. Some auxiliary electronic instrument such as an amplifier can be used to magnify the output signal. Mainly there are four types of electrical strain gauges. First one is capacitance gauges where strain affects capacitance of the circuit. The second one is inductance gauges where inductance gets affected by the change in strain. The third one is piezoelectric gauges where the strain change affects piezoelectric property of the crystal included in the circuit. The fourth one is the most commonly used one-resistive gauges- where strain change affects resistance of the circuit.
