Phase modulated fiber optic sensor

An optic fiber is a glass fiber made with two types of glasses. Core glass is having a slightly higher refractive than the cladding glass. These fibers are effectively used for making different types of sensors. This type of sensor which use optic fibers is immune to electromagnetic and radiofrequency interference. Other features are wide bandwidth, lack of electrical interference, temperature resistant and economical. The phase modulated sensor has a wider dynamic range and is more sensitive and accurate than an amplitude modulated sensor. It can sense the displacements of the order of 1 angstrom. Here a fiber allows propagation of light in two perpendicularly polarized modes, each having a differential propagation constant.
