The energy which exists within the earth is called geothermal energy. The inner zones of earth like solid metallic core, molten core, solid rock and the thin crust are the sources of geothermal energy. To extract energy, deep holes have to be drilled into the surface of the earth. Stainless steel pipes are used to bring steam to the surface of the earth. Stainless steel prevents corrosion and impurities. In general, there exist seven types of geothermal resources-dry steam fields, wet steam fields, hot water springs, geopressure fields, magma deposits, hot dry rock and volcanoes. Dry steam fields, wet steam fields and hot water springs are termed as hydrothermal reservoirs. Geothermal energy is inexhaustive, available all the year, produces minimum pollution, economical and not required any combustion of fuel. But poor efficiency, requirement of large area, noise and possibility of triggering earthquakes are the main disadvantages here.
