Polymerization

There exist two types of polymers- natural polymers and synthetic polymers. Starch, cellulose, proteins, silk, jute, wool, rubber etc. are natural polymers. Polythene, polypropene, polystyrene, PVC, bakelite, nylon, polysters etc. are examples of synthetic polymers. Cellulose acetate and cellulose nitrate belongs to the category of semi-synthetic polymers. Based on the nature of the chemical reaction involved in the formation of the polymers, there are two types of polymers- addition polymers and condensation polymers. Polythene, polypropylene etc. are addition polymers and bakelite, nylon etc. are condensation polymers. According to the usage, there are four types of polymers-elastomers, fibers, resins and plastics. Natural rubber is an elastomer. Wool, nylon etc. are fibers. There are 4 important techniques for polymerization from monomers. They are bulk polymerization, solution polymerization, suspension polymerization and emulsion polymerization.
