Skip hoist is used for shifting articles or materials from ground level to some heights or altitudes. This is very much essential in building construction. It consists of a trolley which can move smoothly on a rail which is fixed on an inclined plane. On reaching the required altitude, trolley tilted mechanically to drop the materials or articles into the containers. These containers are usually called as silos. A shaft and a motor is employed for the whole operation. An electromagnetic brake is used to stop motor quickly whenever it is required. For stopping the trolley at top and down, two limit switches are used. Lifting magnets are used in steel mills, ship operations, scrap yards and foundries. Lift magnets are the best candidates for handling castings and moulds in foundries, wheels, rails, tie plates, ingots, coiled sheet steel, pipes etc. A crane-magnet combination is used for this. A crane which has a lifting magnet hanging on the hook of its hoist rope is called a raw material crane.
